Many people actually come to therapy and counselling feeling confused about their current emotional state. Trained professional mental health practitioners will help identify if you are experiencing a mood disorder, such as depression or anxiety disorder, if you are struggling with residual impacts of trauma, or if what you are dealing with is “circumstantial”, meaning that you have reached your capacity for stress and may benefit from learning how to navigate it better.

It is common to feel uncertain about life decisions, relationship dynamics and the future. If you feel that you cannot find answers for yourself, or your thoughts about these things are going around in circles, you may find it useful to talk with someone who is qualified to listen in a way that helps break these thinking or behavioural patterns
Many people use the terms interchangeably, and the basic concept is the same. You, as the client, are sitting with a qualified professional practitioner, who is skilled at active and empathic listening. Counselling assists people in looking closer at current life challenges, stressors and concerns. The goals we establish tend to be action-driven and may focus on coping strategies. Therapy focuses on the origins of longer seated problems and metal health disorders like depression, anxiety, trauma or PTSD. The goals here are to uncover the root of the problem and to change long term behavioural patterns.

Therapy can help you gain a deep understanding of dynamics that happened a long time ago which influenced your behaviours and beliefs, which may continue to derail the way that you’d like to show up in your life today. We talk. Therapy in my opinion is a dynamic process. In that sense I am actively listening and reflecting back to you what I hear, and what I hear between the lines, in order to help you understand a little more about yourself. Many clients seek therapy not because they are broken, but because their interpretation of life might benefit from a new perspective. We become used to our thoughts and behaviours, and every time that we think a thought, we build a stronger neural network. This network becomes the path of least resistance and the “easy choice” for thinking. So we repeat the same thought patterns over and over, each time carving them more into the brain, almost like auto-pilot. That’s why it is so difficult to break the thought patterns of depression and anxiety on your own. At Compass Counselling, we help you challenge the auto-pilot thoughts and behaviours to help you establish a new perspective.

My story

Hi, I am Katrin. I have worked as a therapist in numerous settings, from non-profit community agencies, to residential treatment facilities and since 2012 private practice (in accordance with the Heilpraktikergesetz HeilprG) here in Frankfurt. Additionally I have taught courses on communication and conflict resolution at VCCT in Vancouver, BC, served for 4 years as a Social Counsellor at the European Central Bank and am currently supporting the global consultancy firm Bain & Company in Germany and Switzerland. My passion lies in providing english-speaking counselling support to clients to help them rediscover their inner wisdom through which they will be able to make positive decisions and experience life with all its gifts.
